Dotcom Heads to Explore Overseas E-market

Dotcom companies are not staying quietly on the home market -- some have started exploring greener fields abroad.

Popular e-commerce website www.8848.net last week extended its antenna across the border to neighboring South Korea.

Last Wednesday, 8848.net and Space Dream Inc (based in South Korea) signed an agreement on construction of an e-marketplace.

Under the agreement, Space will be 8848's operator in the South Korean market while the dotcom would provide necessary online software and e-commerce support services.

Space said it will organize South Korean enterprises to conduct business on the 8848 e-marketplace.

Space is 8848's first foreign partner since its e-marketplace was formally opened to the public last November.

"The joint venture indicated the acceptance of China's dotcom company by international market, the co-operation laid a sound foundation for the further spread of China's dotcoms including 8848," said Tan Zhi, chief executive officer of 8848.

In addition, the co-operation provides huge international trade opportunities for domestic enterprises, Tan said.

As South Korea's second largest international trade partner, China has about US$25 billion in trade with the country every year.

With further development of trade between the two countries, traditional business methods have proved to be more and more unsuitable, said officials with the South Korea International Trade Association.

Governments and enterprises of the two countries have also sought a suitable way of co-operating, according to the South Korean officials.

E-marketplaces, as today's most advanced mode of e-commerce, has become more and more popular overseas.

As China's largest e-commerce company, 8848.net is the first in the country capable of providing an e-marketplace that is on par with those abroad.

Since the 8848 e-marketplace made its debut last November, over 4,000 enterprises have registered with the service.

According to a senior official from Space Dream Inc, it was 8848.net's experience in e-business and its technical advantage that convinced them to choose the dotcom as their partner.

"The co-operation greatly helps our exploitation of domestic clients as well as our development of overseas business," the official said.

Space is an established enterprise in South Korea, with its business covering IT (information technology) hardware production, international trade and many other economic fields.
