E. China City to Host Int'l Vegetable FairAn international vegetable fair will take place in the city of Shouguang in east China's Shandong Province from April 20 to 26, according to a press conference Monday, January 8.More than 1,000 improved varieties of vegetables and a number of new biological fertilizers, pesticides and state-of-the-art agricultural machinery will be shown at the fair, said Shouguang Mayor Liu Decheng at the press conference in Beijing. Businessmen will be able to hold trade talks during the event, he said. Known as "China's Hometown of Vegetables," Shouguang has 47,000 hectares of vegetable with an annual output of 3.5 billion kilograms. Vegetables grown in the city have been sold to all parts of China and 37 countries and regions in the world, such as the United States, Japan, Russia and Republic of Korea. To develop the vegetable industry, the city has introduced improved varieties and technologies from Israel, Japan, Ukraine and other countries. Cherry tomatoes and peppers produced by the city enjoy high reputation nationwide. The fair will be jointly sponsored by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the National "Vegetable Basket Project" Office affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, State Agriculture Comprehensive Development Office and the Shandong Provincial Government. The Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Bank, the European Union, as well as Canada, Australia and more than 30 other international organizations and countries are co-sponsors of the week-long fair, the mayor said.
