Water Conservation Scheme at Longtan Hydropower Station Passes Appraisal

A panel of eight specialists Saturday approved the water conservation scheme at the Longtan hydropower station, construction of which will begin on Hongshui River in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region this year.

The specialists are from organizations including the water conservation monitoring center of the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources and China State Power Corporation.

The experts believe that the scheme goes in line with China's laws regarding water conservation, meets with the requirements of related technologies, includes well-defined targets and responsibilities for prevention and harnessing of soil erosion, and the measures listed for preventing, monitoring and harnessing soil erosion are applicable.

The scheme is drafted by Zhongnan Institute for Surveys, Prospecting and Designs attached to the China State Power Corporation.

Planned to be one of the ten hydropower stations on the Hongshui River, the Longtan hydropower station will be located in Tian'e County of Guangxi. Planning, prospecting and designing on the project began as early as 1958. The station will have a total installed capacity of 5.4 million kw and will cost more than 20 billion yuan (about US$2.4 billion).

Up to now, some one billion yuan (about US$120 million) has been spent on preparations of the Longtan hydropower project, including infrastructure for transportation and supply of materials, relocation of residents from the reservoir area and acquisition of land.

The hydropower station was recently included into a state plan that has listed eight major projects which will start construction this year in the country's campaign to develop the vast west region
