Forum on Deng Xiaoping's Views About Overseas Chinese Affairs Held

A forum was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing January 6 to mark the publication of a book that retells late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's views on overseas Chinese affairs.

The function was attended by Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Luo Haocai, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The book, entitled "Deng Xiaoping on Overseas Chinese Affairs", is jointly compiled by the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council and the Party Literature Research Center (PLRC) of the CPC Central Committee and is published by the Publishing House attached to the PLRC of the CPC Central Committee.

With 22,000 Chinese characters, the book collects 55 expositions of Deng Xiaoping's view about overseas Chinese affairs made from 1977 to 1993, of which, 28 came off the press for the first time. The book also contains ten photos of Deng.

While addressing the forum, Vice Premier Qian Qichen called the publication of the book a major step to make an in-depth study of Deng Xiaoping Theory. The book is of great significance in guiding our overseas Chinese affairs in the new century, he said.

The glorious achievement in the country's reform and opening-up drive has made all walks of life to pay more attention to the overseas Chinese affairs, said Qian, attributing the progress made in overseas Chinese affairs to the right guidance of Deng Xiaoping Theory.

Qian also urged people to further study Deng Xiaoping's views on overseas Chinese affairs in the new century and make new progress in the field by bringing into full play the advantages of overseas Chinese under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with President Jiang Zemin as the core.

Guo Dongpo, head of the Office of the Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council, and Pang Xianzhi, head of the Party Literature Research Center of the CPC Central Committee also delivered speeches at the forum.
