Ebola-Like Fever Breaks Out in Congo: WHOSix Ebola-like cases have been confirmed with five deaths in Bunia, east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said Oladapo Walker, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Uganda, in Kampala on January 5."The samples have been sent to South Africa for testing and we are waiting for the result," Walker told a news conference at the headquarters of Ugandan Health Ministry. He said the WHO is actively coordinating with partners to monitor the situation and experts from the WHO and Doctors Without Frontiers have already arrived in Bunia. Meanwhile, Ugandan Director-General of Health Services Francis Omaswa said no new Ebola cases were confirmed over the past two weeks in Gulu and Masindi districts in Uganda. Ebola, which was first identified in 1976 in Sudan and the DRC, broke out in Gulu last September. This is the first time the killer disease struck the east African country. |
