Native Chinese Music Scholars Seek New PerspectiveMore than 100 scholars from China's mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and overseas gathered in Hong Kong Friday at a native Chinese music conference to explore new perspectives of the native Chinese music in the new century.Native studies of Chinese music history, theories of tuning systems and music aesthetics have a long and solid foundation, said participates at the conference entitled "Chinese Music Research: New Perspectives in the 21st Century International Conference." However, the increasing importation of Western music and cultural concepts has brought a negative impact to Chinese traditional music and, meanwhile, brought a sense of urgency with respect to the preservation of traditional music among native musicologists, scholars said. During the weeklong conference, scholars will look into issues such as "will musicologists of Chinese music be able to find fitting theoretical and methodological approaches that suit Chinese music" and "what are the key issues and problems ahead in the new century." Themes of the conference include "theory, concept and methodology of Chinese musicology," "tradition and change of Chinese music," "cultural exchange and accumulation" and "music education." Folk artists of China's ethnic minorities from Inner Mongolia and northeast, northwest and southwest regions will stage a rarely heard concert of folk songs and folk instruments during the conference.
