China Telecom Expands Bandwidth of Chinanet

China Telecom has expanded the bandwidth of its Internet network, Chinanet, to 800G and increased the transmission capacity of the network by 15 times.

The international exit bandwidth of the network is now 2G, and is expected to reach 3.3G by March 2001.

Leng Rongquan, Vice-Manager of China Telecom, noted that the development is in line with the demands of customers for more robust transmission capacity as the Internet and data traffic grow.

He noted that slow connection speed has become one of the major complaints by Chinese Internet users.

China Telecom began to expand its Internet network in the second half of 2000.

Chinanet now has 16 million subscribers, accounting for 70 percent of China's Internet market. By 2005, it will have 80 million to 100 million subscribers, according to Leng.
