Spain, US to Sign Document on Future Relations

Spain and the United States are to sign a joint declaration next Thursday that will set the basis for their future relations, official sources in Madrid said January 5.

The document marks the beginning of a review of the Spain-US relations and provides a projection of their future development in every aspect.

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has scheduled a visit to Madrid to sign the document.

The transition team of US President-elect George W. Bush, who will assume office on January 20, has been informed in detail about the contents of the joint declaration, according to the sources.

Albright and her Spanish counterpart Josep Pique will also examine the roles of Washington and Madrid in seeking a negotiated solution to the Middle East crisis.
