Japan Names New Ambassador to China

Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono on January 5 appointed Koreshige Anami, former director of the Japanese Cabinet Councilor's Office on External Affairs, as ambassador to China, the Foreign Ministry said.

Anami, a 59-year-old Tokyo native, will succeed Sakutaro Tanino, 64, who is set to retire.

Anami served as director general of the Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Bureau from August 1997 until taking up the post as director of the Cabinet Councilor's Office on External Affairs in January 2000.

Anami's new appointment is expected to take effect January 11, the ministry said.
