4th Quarter Performance Index Moves up Slightly

Performance of Chinese enterprises improved slightly in the fourth quarter of last year, the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday.

The index measuring performance of the country's enterprises reached 125.4 points during the period, a rise of 2.2 points and 10.0 points, respectively, over those for the previous quarter and the same period of 1999.

State-owned enterprises maintained strong performances during the September-December period, with the index reaching 121.1 points, an increase of 2.6 points and 9.9 points from those for the previous quarter and the same quarter of 1999.

Performance of industrial enterprises was the best among all enterprises for five consecutive quarters, with the index standing at 130.7 points.

"China's coal exploration sector began to rationalize its problems with supply and demand, and its index rose 17.4 points and 32.2 points over those for the previous quarter and the corresponding period of 1999 to reach 106.4 points," the bureau said.

Performances by listed companies, key State-owned companies, experimental enterprise groups and township enterprises were above the average level, the bureau said.

At the same time, enterprises in the western areas began to improve their performances faster than those in central and eastern areas, it said.

"The growth of enterprises' major indicators such as production and sales began to slow down, but their profits began to pick up and reached their best level during the fourth quarter," the bureau said.

The performance of Chinese enterprises will keep stable during the first quarter of this year, with the index expected to reach 122 points, it said.

According to the statistics bureau, Chinese entrepreneurs expressed strong confidence in the country's national economy.

The confidence index of these entrepreneurs reached 117.9 points during the fourth quarter, up 1 point from that for the previous quarter and up 17.3 points over the index for the same period in 1999.

The confidence indices by entrepreneurs will be stable next year, the bureau said.
