China's New Generation Nuclear Reactor

Because of its high energy output, low level of emissions and long safety record, nuclear energy has become a major source of electricity. Currently more than 400 reactors are operating around the world. In order to expand nuclear energy use, both scientists and the nuclear industry recognize that humanity must increase uranium use and exploration.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Chinese scientists are carrying out path-breaking research on advanced nuclear reactors in the "Non-Polluting Nuclear Accelerator System". The project will improve Chinese nuclear technology and keep step with international advances.

It has been widely agreed that new measures should be taken to lessen the impact of nuclear waste on the environment and try to recycle it as useful material.

Nuclear generation of electricity has just begun in China. The Institute of High-Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the Chinese Research Institute of Nuclear Power and other units have begun a national project and launched research into this advanced nuclear system.

The chief scientist of the program, Ding Dazhao, said China began theoretical research in 1995 and at present the project is still at the research stage.

Next, scientists will explore physical and technical possibilities. They will build equipment while theoretical research continues and push forward in technological development.

During the first five years, the staff will analyze and test the possibilities of this enormous nuclear fission project, determine technical measures and complete the building of a lab installation for testing.

In the second five years, experimentation will go on to lay a foundation for the next phase of development, according to the latest issue of Beijing Review.
