Huizhou International Digital Festival Scheduled

Huizhou, a city well-known for making electronic and information products, will host an international digital festival in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry and Guangdong Province in mid- April.

Xiao Zhiheng, mayor of Huizhou, said his city has set a goal to build itself into a modern information network metropolis by the year 2010 and the international digital festival would help advance the development of the city's information industry and technology.

Huizhou is ranked fifth in the country in terms of electronic industrial output value. Last year, the city's electronic industrial output value amounted to 40 billion yuan (US$4.8 billion), accounting for about a half of the city's total industrial output value.

According to Xiao, the festival will highlight information technology and the new economy and will show off digital products and related technologies.

Major activities of the festival will include an exhibition of international digital information technology and products, a forum on digitization, an exchange meeting for personnel specialized in digital information and electronic technologies, as well as the promotion of interim and downstream products of a Sino-foreign petrochemical venture jointly invested in by oil giant Shell and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and on developing tourism local resources of Huizhou.
