Doctor Speaks Out on Pope's IllnessOne of the pope's doctors has confirmed publicly that the ailing pontiff is suffering from Parkinson's disease.Italian orthopaedic surgeon Gianfranco Fineschi told a weekly magazine he was concerned about the health of Pope John Paul II after a gruelling Jubilee Year in 2000. Fineschi, who operated on the pope after he broke his leg in 1994, has become the first member of his medical team to acknowledge that the 80-year-old pontiff is suffering from the debilitating disease. The interview is to be published in Thursday's Oggi, which permitted only a few quotes to be released through ANSA. The Vatican has never officially acknowledged the pope has Parkinson's and no member of his medical team has before openly linked the pope with the disease. |
