China Invites Bid on Dikes Along Yangtze RiverThe Yangtze River Water Resources Committee (YWRC) invited bids Wednesday, January 3, for 37 dike construction projects along the Yangtze river, the nation's longest.The projects, mainly located in the middle reaches of the river, are expected to cost about 500 million yuan (US$61 million). China began to carry out an ambitious dyke-enforcement project along the river in 1999, which aims to improve the anti-flood capacity of the Yangtze embankments. The project will take four to five years and cost 15 billion yuan (1.8 billion US dollars) in central government funding. The projects, though difficult to complete, have so far received about 900 bids from over 200 companies across the country, said Liu Yong, deputy chief engineer with YWRC. The bidding has also been carried out on the Internet, said Liu. |
