Former US Secretary of State Rogers DiesUS former Secretary of State William Pierce Rogers died at 87 at a hospital near Washington Tuesday night, a spokesman said Wednesday.The spokesman for Clifford, Chance, Rogers and Wells, a law firm in which Rogers was a partner, said Rogers died of congestive heart failure at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland State. Rogers, best known for his plan for Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank, was attorney general from 1957 to 1961 in the Eisenhower administration and secretary of state from 1969 to 1973 under President Nixon. Rogers, born in Norfolk, New York, in June 1913, was a graduate of Cornell University and Cornell Law School. He was a Washington lawyer for most of his career. As a private attorney, he represented Martin Luther King Jr. before the Supreme Court in a landmark libel case. Rogers is survived by his wife, Adele, and four children -- a daughter and three sons. |
