Placido Domingo Arrives in China

At 10:45 AM January 3, Placido Domingo, the dramatic Spanish of the Three Tenors in the world, arrived in Shanghai from Seoul by the flight of Asiana Airlines.

Placido Domingo, one of the world's three greatest tenors, rehearses opera with famous Chinese singer He Hui after a press conference on January 3, 2000 in Shanghai. He will begin his solo concert on January 5 at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Maglev Successfully Developed in Chengdu

The world first manned high-temperature superconductive magnetically levitated (Maglev) test train was successfully developed on January 3, in the Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. Made of high-temperature superconductive materials, the test train claims a suspending height of 23mm and an acceleration of 1 meter/ second. With a total suspending weight of 530kg, it is able to carry 5 persons.

Hillary Sworn in As U.S.Senator��

Overseas Kindling of Universiade Torchlight Arrives in Beijing

"China's first giant seal" was placed on display in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, at the beginning of the new century. The seal made from granite is 1.8 meters in length, width and height, and weighs 15 tons.

The six-day "New Century Automobile Exhibition" closed in Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on January 3. On display were the latest family cars and mini-cars. Sold were nearly 100 cars worth 10 million yuan.

Twelve Killed in Spain Road Accident

A suburb train collided with an overcrowded van Wednesday morning in Lorca in southeast Spain, killing 12 people and seriously injuring three others. local media reports said.The dead and two of the injured were Ecuadorian immigrants and the others were Spaniards. According to the reports, the 7-seated van, which was overcrowded with 14 Ecuadorian immigrants, collided with the train at a road junction. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Secretary of State for foreign affairs Enrique Fernandez went to the scene of the accident.

Equal opportunities for women in the German military has come after the European Court ruled against legislation banning women from combat positions. The judges said the legislation violated European Union laws against gender discrimination.The German military opened its ranks to women in combat units for the first time on Tuesday, accepting 244 female recruits. Most have gone into the army, with others joining the air force and navy.
