Russia Denies Deploying Nuclear Weapons in Baltic Enclave
The Russian Baltic Fleet Wednesday denied a front page story carried by a US newspaper, The Washington Times, which said Russia is transferring tactical nuclear weapons to the Baltic region.
An aide to the fleet commander, Anatoly Lobsky, told the press Wednesday that this report "could be a matter of political provocation."
The story, carried by Wednesday's issue of The Washington Times, said that Russia is moving battlefield nuclear weapons into the military enclave of Kaliningrad in an apparent effort to step up military pressures on the expanded NATO alliance.
Lobsky said the Baltic Sea region has been announced a non-nuclear area and the Baltic Fleet is fulfilling its international obligations, Lobsky said.
The press service of the Russian Defense Ministry also rejected the report on the same day, saying such information is far away from the reality.
Kaliningrad is a Baltic Sea port located between Poland and Lithuania, and a major military base for Russian ground and naval forces, including the headquarters of the Baltic Fleet.
