China to Promulgate Knitted Underwear Standard

The long-awaited industrial standard for thermal knitted underwear has made its debut.

The industrial standard will go into effect on March 1 this year, according to the State Administration of Textile Industry.

"A clear criterion for the controversial thermal knitted underwear will guide the sector to a healthier development by phasing out shoddy products and fakes," said Wang Lanying, director of the standard drafting team.

Wang added that the standard covers 15 items including the product's insulating efficiency, moisture absorbency and ability to breathe.

Thermal knitted underwear has been a market favorite in China since last year.

Some 500 makers entered the market last year while there were only 10 factories in the country making thermal knitted underwear in 1998.

The sales volume of thermal knitted underwear exceeded 3 billion yuan last year.
