Indian, Pakistan Troops Exchange FireIndian and Pakistani troops exchanged heavy gunfire Wednesday following a month's relative calm along the frontier in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian police said.A police official said, "There were no casualties on our side following the exchange of fire which lasted for over 20 minutes." The firing occurred near Rajbagh in Kathua district, 84 km south of Jammu, according to the Press Trust of India. It was the first major violence on the border since Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced a suspension of hostilities against militants operating in Kashmir more than a month ago. When Vajpayee extended the month-long ceasefire by another four weeks in late December, Pakistan responded by announcing a partial withdrawal of its troops from the Line of Control in Kashmir region. |
