Argentina Determined to Recover Sovereignty over Malvinas

Argentina reiterated Tuesday its determination to recover sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, also called by Britons the Falkland Islands.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry made the affirmation in a communique released one day before the 168th anniversary of British occupation of the Malvina, Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and surrounding sea areas off the coast of Argentina.

The ministry said that Argentina will stick to a peaceful solution to the disputed territories, respecting international rights, ways of life and interests of the islands' inhabitants.

It expressed the conviction that renewal of negotiations on the issue, in accordance with the repeated calls of the international community, will help create a proper framework for a fair and definitive solution to the dispute.

On January 3, 1833, British forces occupied the Malvinas Islands, displacing Argentine colonizers and authorities established there.
