Mideast Talks End With No BreakthroughUS President Bill Clinton and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ended two round of talks Tuesday, but no peace breakthrough was reached, the White House said.Spokesman Jake Siewert said, Clinton answered questions from Arafat about the parameters of a prospective deal involving the return of Palestinian refugees and control over the Jerusalem holy site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Arabs as al-Haram al- Sharif. Siewert noted that Arafat also agreed with Clinton to intensify attempts to reduce acts of violence, particularly shootings, arrest those responsible and resume security cooperation "to combat terrorism." Clinton planned to talk to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak by phone on Wednesday, Siewert said. |
