Zhejiang University to Invest RMB 2.2 Bn Yuan for a New Campus

With a total investment of 2.2bn yuan (around US$275 million) Zhejiang University is to build a new campus covering an area of 3,369 mu.

The current Zhejiang University, a merger of former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang University of Medical Sciences, can not give full play to merging advantages due to its dispersed locations in four different places. So the university has decided to find a new campus site, which can provide an accommodation for 30,000 undergraduates, twice as large as the original Zhejiang University, and is to be built in northwest Hangzhou, five kilometers away from the original Zhejiang University.

According to Hu Xiaoming, deputy director of architectural department of Zhejiang University, in charge of design bidding of the new campus, it has received an active response since the bidding information was made known on Internet. Over 110 units and individuals throughout the world took part in the bidding and finally the architecture department of South China University of Technology carried away the laurel out from 68 designs with a precise planning and ingenious configuration. The project will be started in April, 2001 and completed by September 2002.
