UN Informed of Cambodia's Passage of Law on Khmer Rouge TrialThe United Nations had been informed that the National Assembly of Cambodia approved the draft law on the establishment of a tribunal to try former Khmer Rouge leaders, UN said Tuesday.A statement from the spokesman's office said that Hans Corell, U.N. Legal Counsel, has been in telephone contact with his Cambodian counterpart, Sok An, chairman of the Council of Ministers. For the United Nations, it is of utmost importance to be able to ascertain that the law is in fact in accordance with the understanding reached between the United Nations and Cambodia in July last year, the statement said. Only when the United Nations has an official translation into English of the legislation as adopted will it be possible to make a final assessment whether it can enter into a formal agreement with the government of Cambodia in this important matter, the statement added. The United Nations has been involved in getting a trial set up since 1997. |
