France Welcomes Cambodia's Decision to Try Khmer Rouge

France welcomed the Cambodian Parliament's decision on Tuesday to try the surviving former leaders of the Khmer Rouge (Democratic Kampuchea) regime, which is presumed responsible for 1.7 million deaths between 1975 and 1979.

"We are happy about the National Assembly of Cambodia's adoption of this legislation that will allow the country to judge those responsible for the genocide," said the assistant spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry Bernard Valero.

It is up to the Cambodian people to decide the "forms and conditions" of the trial, he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Cambodian Parliament unanimously approved of the trial. The court will feature both national and international characteristics.
