New Party Chief for NW China Province

Song Zhaosu has been named as secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) provincial committee of Gansu Province in northwest China, replacing Sun Ying.

Born in 1941, Song is a native of Nanyang in central Henan Province.

Song graduated from the Department of Politics of Zhengzhou University in 1964 and joined the CPC in 1965.

Until 1998, Song served as a government and Party official at county, prefectural and provincial levels in Henan, and his posts included vice governor and vice secretary of the provincial CPC committee.

In April 1998, he was transferred to Gansu as an acting governor, and in November 1998, he was elected as a vice secretary of the provincial CPC committee of Gansu.

In January 1999, Song was elected as the provincial governor of Gansu.

He was a delegate to the 13th and 14th CPC National Congresses and an alternate member of the 15th CPC Central Committee.
