Most Children with Poor Academic Records Suffer from Mental Disorder: Chinese Experts

After two years of research, a group of Chinese experts have concluded that 80 to 90 percent of the children with poor academic records have normal intelligence quotient, and the mental disorder they are suffering from is the main factor leading to their unsatisfactory performance in school.

These experts are from Jinan Children Health Research Institute in east China's Shandong Province.

Their research shows that some 20 percent of school children are having problems in their study, although most of them have a normal or even high intelligence quotient.

Most of them are suffering from restless syndrome, adaptation disorder, or specific learning disorders such as bradylexia, the experts indicated, adding that all these result from sensory dysfunction.

To address this problem, this institute has recently opened a specialized service to treat the children troubled by learning disorder. Most of such children could be cured and make rapid progress as long as they receive psychotherapy at an early age, according to these experts.
