660,000 Cars Needed This Year in Chinese Auto Market

According to the estimation by the sales of the Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. Ltd., about 660,000 cars are needed in the Chinese car market in the year 2001.

Cars at a cost of 90,000 to 150,000 yuan per unit, as the survey indicates, have attracted the attention of most of the private car consumers, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total needed, while the taxis needed are numbered at 180,000 to 200,000 all told.

However, we see 22 percent of the demand go to cars with a price lower than 90,000 yuan, 19 percent to those of 150,000 to 200,000 yuan, 12 to 19 percent to those of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan and only eight percent fall to those of over 300,000 yuan.

This year, the Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. Ltd. is looking forward to a sales of over 220,000 cars, which include 40 percent of the general Santana cars and 30,000 Passat B5 put into operation on a large scale since last October, said a responsible person of the sale company.

The Shanghai Volkswagen will, as he noted, produce 240,000 cars next year, which consist of 60,000 Passat cars, 70,000 Santana 2000 and 100,000 or more general Santana cars. At present, Passat B5 has constituted over 60 percent of all cars of the same price in China while Santana 2000, taken up 50 percent and general Santana still balanced at 40 percent.
