Sina.com and Sohu.com Approved for Online News

Chinese Internet portals Sina.com and Sohu.com said December 29 they had been granted the licence for news releasing.

Wang Zhidong, CEO of Sina.com said, "This latest news license demonstrates the government's commitment to China's Internet industry."

Charles Zhang, CEO and president of Sohu.com, said, "this is the first time the government has given us such an important formal approval and it is a historic breakthrough for the Internet industry in China."

It was not immediately clear how many other websites would be awarded news publishing licences by the government.
