Army Hands Over CDMA Network to China Unicom

A CDMA mobile communications network managed by the military was officially handed over to the China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom) Monday in Beijing.

The network is now operating in five major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin and has a total of 550,000 users.

According to a spokesman from China Unicom, which was authorized by the Chinese government to handle CDMA mobile communications business, the hand-over will help the company to improve its market competitiveness.

China Unicom now has over 18 million users, of which 13 million were registered during the year 2000.
