HK Newspapers Hail Arrival of New Year

All the major Hong Kong newspapers filled their front pages with stories on the hot New Year celebrations Monday, January 1, 2001.

Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po carried the New Year greetings delivered by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa.

The papers attached special importance to the three major tasks facing the Chinese people which Jiang noted in his New Year message: to progress the drive of the Chinese modernization, to realize the reunification of the motherland and to maintain the world peace.

Tung's call on Hong Kong residents for further efforts to build Hong Kong into a peaceful, prosperous, caring and civilized society was also given prominent coverage in the papers.

Almost half million people turned out to greet the New Year in Hong Kong, with the biggest crowds of over 400,000 people at the countdown hotspots in Tsim Sha Tsui and Times Square, reported the South China Morning Post.

Singtao Daily described the celebrations at Lan Kwai Fong, a HK street famous for its bars, featuring more than 10,000 screaming revelers, deafening music and colorful ribbons and lights.
