Macao Newspapers Hail Arrival of New Year

Major Chinese newspapers in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China carried commentaries on Monday hailing the coming of the new year and new century.

The Macao Daily News said in an editorial that the year 2001 will see China begin the third-step strategy in the modernization process. In the middle of the new century, China will grow to be a strong socialist country with a high level of democracy.

Facts have shown that the "one country, two systems" principle has profound scientific basis and strong vitality, and is the best mode to achieve the complete reunification of the motherland, the newspaper said.

The Jornal Va Kio said in a commentary that the progress of humanity relies on the successive summing of experience in the past and then make improvements in the future.

On the basis of steady and smooth implementation of "one country, two systems" in the past year, the SAR government should grasp opportunities to guide residents into a more promising year, the newspaper said.

The newspaper of Cheng Pou said that the past year witnessed improving public security and booming economy in the Macao SAR. In the new year, all people in Macao should exert concerted efforts to contribute to the further development of the SAR.

The Jornal San Wa Ou said that Macao people have actually acted as the masters of their own affairs in the past year, and the principles of "one country, two systems," "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy in the SAR have been carried out well.

At the beginning of a new century, it is a regret that Taiwan has not been reunified with the motherland. "We expect that the complete reunification of the motherland can be achieved in the new century so that all Chinese people get united to create a new era of the Chinese nation," the paper said.
