Israeli President Urges Tough Action Against Palestinian GunmenIsraeli government and the Israel Defense Force (IDF) should take tough actions against those Palestinians who killed Israelis no mater where they are, President Moshe Katsav said on Sunday.Condemning the killing on Sunday by Palestinian gunmen of two Israeli settlers in the West Bank, Katsav said the incident was very grave and the IDF should response harshly in order to protect Israeli lives in the territories. Binyamin Zev kahane, son of assassinated extreme right politician Meir Kahane, and his wife Talya, were killed in the shooting attack south of the West bank settlement of Ofra, the IDF said. Five of the couple's children who were travelling in the car with them were injured. One child is in serious condition, two others sustained medium injuries and another two were lightly wounded. The shooting incident took place early Sunday morning when the family travelled from Ofra to Jerusalem. Their car overturned and rolled down into ravine after the gunmen opened fire and hit the car. Kahane was killed immediately, while his wife was critically wounded and died later of her injuries. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said that the shooting against Israeli citizens will not break Israel's strength and the " murderers will not get away without punishment." Barak also said the IDF and other security forces will continue to use all means against the perpetrators of attacks. Meir kahane was assassinated by an Arab gunman in New York in November 1990. Binyamin Kahane, who was in his early 30s, had been jailed several times for his anti-Arab activities. Following the shooting incident, the IDF mobilized more forces in the West Bank, particularly in the areas around Ramallah and Hebron, to tighten the security for the settlers. Meanwhile, settlers in the Ramallah area have been blocking roads leading to the Palestinian towns and villages, attacking Palestinian vehicles. |
