Large Sewage Treatment Project Starts to Work

The first phase construction on the largest sewage treatment project on the Huaihe River, a major river in east China, was completed and put into service Thursday, December 28.

The project, with an investment of 760 million yuan (US$93 million), now treats 400,000 tons of sewage everyday.

The project, located in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan province, is considered vital in harnessing the troublesome river.

The second phase of the project is scheduled for completion in September of 2001, when its daily capacity of sewage treatment will hit 800,000 tons.

The Huaihe River flows from west to east, with the Yellow River to the north and the Yangtze River to the south. The river flows through Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces in the eastern part of China.

Throughout history, people and farmland in the basins of the river suffered from flooding and drought.
