Filipinos Urged to Unite to Heal Nation

Philippine President Joseph Estrada called on the Filipino people Sunday to unite and work hard to heal the nation in the coming near year.

"In welcoming the new year, let us be united in prayer and in our efforts to heal our nation," Estrada said in his New Year's message.

He said the people need to unite and help each other more than ever in facing the challenges of the present, noting that more challenges will come their way in 2001.

"I ask that we unite and help each other for a stronger and more progressive Philippines. Let us show the world that we Filipinos can recover from our problems through hard work and unity," he said.

In his message, the president also said that while the past year brought its share of problems, the new year should bring hopes of better times ahead.

The past year has been a trying year, but the Filipino people's collective efforts to push through amidst difficulties has reinforced their ties as a people, he said.

"Our history has been forged by the many victories born from the heroism an indomitable spirit of the Filipino in responding to the challenges of his time," he said.
