Yangxin Incident Being Properly Dealt With

The Yangxin incident which took place in Yangxin County of east China's Shandong Province earlier this month is being properly handled and the local people are in a calm mood and the social order is normal.

On December 8, an incident occurred in Heliu Town of Yangxin County, which went against the country's policy on minority people and hurt the feelings of the people of the Hui ethnic minority.

On December 12, at the instigation of a handful of people and organized by them, several hundred of Hui people from the Mengcun Hui Autonomous County in Hebei Province traveled to Yangxin by automobiles and clashed with police who tried to talk them round.

In the clash six people died, 32 people including 13 policemen were wounded, according to sources.

Following the incident, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council instructed to give emergency treatment to the injured, properly deal with the aftermath of the incident, find out the truth as soon as possible and handle it in accordance with the law.

The Ministry of Public Security sent investigators to the scene on the same day. The CPC provincial committees and governments of Shandong and Hebei immediately organized efforts to treat the wounded, deal with the aftermath, and investigate the incident according to law.

The six dead were buried according to the customs of the Hui people and the injured have all received medical treatment.

At present local people are in a calm mood and the social order is normal, sources said.

Shandong Province has already removed Liu Chengwen, secretary of the CPC Yangxin County Committee, County Head Wang Li and head of the county Public Security Bureau Wang Tianhe from their posts, and will continue the investigation in accordance with the law.

Hebei Province has decided to circulate a notice to criticize principal leaders of the Mengcun Hui Autonomous County and will continue to investigate relevant people according to law.

At present, the Supreme People's Procuratorate is investigating the incident. Those responsible will be seriously punished in accordance with the law.

An official of the relevant department said that the Party and government have always adhered to the policy to respect the customs of ethnic minority people and their freedom of religious belief in order to promote national unity and common progress. He said the incident will surely be treated in a serious and just manner according to law for the promotion of stability and unity.
