Chinese Xie Jun Beats Male Counterpart in Chess Battle
World champion Xie Jun had the last smile in a chess battle as she beat male grandmaster Nigel Short of Britain with an aggregate scoring of 2.5:1.5 on Sunday, December 31.
Xie lived up to the reputation of being "Queen of Chess" as she, moving first with the white pieces, beat Short in the fourth and last game for a record of two wins, one draw and one loss.
The previous three games were deadlocked in 1.5-all, which experts said was a truly praiseworthy achievement for Xie Jun considering the strength of her opponent Short.
Short, 35, was qualified for being the challenger to world champions in 1991 and 1992 and his ranking points stand at 2,677, 109 ahead of Xie.
Xie is fresh from her victory in December's women's world chess championships in New Delhi where she was crowned for the fourth time in ten years.
She also helped China retain its women's team title in the 34th Chess Olympiad at Istanbul in November.
