Indonesian Police Stepping up Security on New Year's Eve

Indonesian National Police, in cooperation with the military, will be on full alert on the new year's eve to prevent a possible repeat of last Sunday's bomb explosions at several churches, a police spokesman said.

"Go ahead with new year's celebrations. Don't be afraid, don't panic, don't be scared by bomb threats. Just enjoy your new year's eve," the Jakarta Post daily Sunday quoted Brig. Gen. Saleh Saaf as saying.

He said that revelers should feel safe to go to any place they wanted, despite the spate of bomb blasts in six province on Christmas Eve which killed at least 17 people and injured about 100 others.

"We will deploy maximum security at Taman Mini (where Jakarta citizens will celebrate the new year eve). Nothing to worry about, " Saaf said here Saturday.

He confirmed that as many as 110,000 policemen will be deployed throughout the country to safeguard the new year's eve festivities.

To safeguard the year-end festivities, the Jakarta police will deploy 34,000 personnel.

Meanwhile, Saaf said police had already identified six suspects in the Christmas eve bombings that occurred outside churches in 14 cities across the country, But three of them had died, two others were undergoing medical treatment and one was on the run.

Police in the 14 cities where the Christmas-eve bombings took place have so far quizzed a total of at least 225 people as witnesses, he said
