Russia Completes Tests on New Nuclear SubmarineRussia's newest nuclear-powered submarine has successfully completed all tests in the northern White Sea, the submarine's constructors said Friday.During two weeks at sea, the Cheetah submarine tested its technical systems, making sure that its nuclear reactors, weapon systems, navigational and other equipment were functioning properly. After the successful tests, the Akula-class submarine may join Russia's Northern Fleet as early as next year, said a spokesman for the Sevmashpredpriyatie factory where the submarine was built. The 12.8-thousand-tonne submarine, operated by a crew of 60, is equipped with 28 long-range missiles and can operate at 600 meters (333 fathoms) under water. |
