Indonesian Government to Treat Religions Equally: Wahid
The Indonesian government should give equal treatment to all religions as it was not the state but the believers who cultivate and practice the respective religions, President Abdurrahman Wahid said.
At a Christmas celebration Friday, the president said that some religious adherents sometimes ask for a special treatment, more than the government was giving to followers of other religions, which is unfair, Wahid said.
The president said that the founders of this state had taken very important and accurate stance in formally separating religions life from state affairs.
Although he did not directly touch on the Christmas-eve bombing incidents in the country which killed at least 16 people, the president expressed concern over a certain group of people who try to take actions against the law.
There are certain people who do not hesitate to act against the law, he added.
Earlier, government officials have reaffirmed that it was unruffled by terrorist attacks.
