Guatemalan President Condemns Death Threats Against Cuban Doctors

Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo on Friday condemned death threats against 450 Cuban doctors who are engaged in humanitarian work in his country, according to reports from the Central American state.

"I condemn and reject those who from the darkness and anonymity threaten and intimidate those foreign professionals who share their science and technics in a country like Guatemala, where there is so much to do, specially in abandoned areas," he said.

Portillo made the remarks during celebrations of the 4th anniversary of the signing of the peace agreement between the Guatemalan government and the rebels, the reports said.

The Cuban doctors arrived in Guatemala in 1998 in the wake of hurricane Mitch and have since November received death threats from the paramilitary Anti-Communist Secret Army.

Humanitarian organizations have asked the Guatemalan government to investigate the threats and take necessary measures to protect the medical volunteers.
