Top Awards for Performing Arts Issued

China's Ministry of Culture issued Saturday, December 30, the national awards for the performing arts, or Wenhua Awards, including the 11 grand prizes, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The 11 top prizes of the Ninth Wenhua Awards went to 11 operas, dramas and other art shows, mostly on contemporary themes, including the Beijing opera "Rickshaw Boy" by the Beijing Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province.

Meanwhile, another 74 awards were issued to other dramas, and 141 individual prizes were given to performers and other art workers by the ministry.

At the awarding ceremony, Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng said that the awarded artists have created the outstanding performances, which have been favored by the audiences in the country.

All the prize-winning works reflect the top level of China's performing arts, he said.

The ministry has decided to issue the awards, which was initiated in 1991, every two years in the future.
