Beijing Sets up Monument for Cultural Relic

A stone monument was set up Friday recognizing Temple of Heaven, a famous masterpiece of ancient architecture, in order to remind people that cultural relics like these need to be protected.

Noguchi, delegate from United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to China and Wang Guangtao, deputy mayor of Beijing attended the unveiling ceremony.

The Temple of Heaven has been listed on UNESCO's "World Heritage List" in December 1998 along with the equally renowned Summer Palace.

The stone-made monument, designed by well-known architect Luo Zhewen and Zhou Weiquan, stands by the southern gate of the temple. On the monument were engraved the Chinese and English characters of "world heritage" and the date when the temple was put on the " World Heritage List."

The Temple of Heaven or Tiantan was built in 1420 as a place for the emperors to perform rituals and worship Heaven. It became a public park in 1918.
