Israeli Police Heighten Security Measures in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem
Police forces have increased their presence in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem following the bombing attacks Thursday and in anticipation of the Friday Muslim prayers at the holy shrines in the Old City of Jerusalem.
The police have brought extra members to the Old City, but will allow all Muslim residents of Jerusalem and Israeli citizens to enter the disputed holy site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and Muslims as al-Haram al-Sherif, or Noble Sanctuary, for prayers.
No age restriction was imposed, Israel Radio reported. But Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza could not attend the prayer performance due to the closure imposed overnight after the bomb attacks.
The site is housing the Wailing Wall, the holiest shrine in Judaism, and the Al Aqsa mosque, the third most sacred shrine in Islam.
The Jerusalem police have been on high alert since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian bloody clashes three months ago which has claimed more than 320 lives, mostly Palestinians.
In the meantime, Tel Aviv police have also fortified forces following a bus attack Thursday afternoon in which 14 people were injured. Police and the Israeli General Security Service (Or Shin Bet) are continuing their investigation into the bombing in an attempt to capture the terrorists.
The militant Palestinian group Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.
