1 Mn Yuan Donated to Protect Mother River
The Green Hope Project, a program launched by the China Youth Development Foundation to protect the Mother River, on December 27 received so far the largest donation totaling over 1 million yuan from the Acer Group, a world-famous IT giant.
The fund, the last hefty donation in 2000, will be spent on the construction of a 10,000 mu (15 mu = one hectare) green project hope forest in the soil erosion serious Leshan area in Sichuan Province on the upstream of the Yangtze River, in an effort to improve the local ecological environment.
The forest, consisting of rationally mixed tree species, will be built along banks of the Dadu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, that involves Shawan District and the center of Leshan City, covering a total area equivalent to the size of 16 Tian'anmen Square.
When completed, the forest will play a huge role in water conservation and improve soil fertility. Meanwhile, implementation of the project will improve locals' production and living environment and boost local economic and social development.
