Sri Lankan President Returns after Five Weeks Abroad

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga returned to the capital of Colombo on Thursday after a five-week abroad, the official Daily News reported on Friday.

During her visit to Europe she led a delegation comprising several ministers to attend the Sri Lanka Development Forum meeting held in Paris on December 18-19 during which 24 donor countries and international organizations pledged assistance of US$3 billion for projects on road development, fisheries sector development, skills development, power sector expansion, water supply and sanitation as well as education in the war-torn country.

She also held official talks with top government officials in England and France during which she outlined her government's efforts to develop the country and resolve the ethnic problem that has plagued the country since 1983.
