China Commemorates International Day for Biological DiversityChina's State Environmental Protection Administration held a news conference on China's protection of biological diversity Thursday in Beijing, as part of the country's commemorative activities for Friday's International Day for Biological Diversity.According to Wang Dehui, deputy director of Natural Ecology Protection Department of the State Environmental Protection Administration, this year's activities focus on realizing biological safety, enhancing awareness of protecting biological diversity among the public and strengthening protection of biological habitats. The activities are scheduled to end Friday. China ranks third in terms of the number of biological species, behind only Brazil and India worldwide, said Wang. The International Day for Biological Diversity is to commemorate the Convention on Biological Diversity that came into effect on December 29, 1993. The Convention was drafted by the United Nations Environment Program and witnessed by some 176 member countries up until February 14, 2000.
