Eritrean, Ethiopian Military Officers Discuss Peace Agreement Implementation

Senior military officers from Eritrea and Ethiopia, together with officials of the United Nations, met in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Thursday to discuss details of implementing the comprehensive peace agreement signed in Algiers, capital of Algeria, on December 12.

According to a statement released by the U.N. mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia after the meeting, the two sides have agreed "on full transparency of all relevant information on known and suspected minefields in the mission area" and a comprehensive map of mined areas will be drawn on the basis of date supplied by both sides.

The meeting of the Military Coordination Commission, chaired by the U.N. mission's force commander Patrick Cammaert, was aimed at resolving the security issues related to the peacekeeping force.

The meeting is seen as a major step in minimizing the risk to peacekeepers deployed in the region and the building of confidence among all parties involved in the peace process, the statement said.

The U.N. mission is now in the process of deploying peacekeeping troops in a temporary security zone, a 25-kilometer strip of land along the common border of the two Horn African countries.

The frontlines between Eritrea and Ethiopia have been quiet since June this year when the two sides concluded a deal of cessation of hostilities.
