Palestinians Want Detailed Peace Accord

Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said in Cairo Thursday, December 28, that the Palestinians want a detailed not framework agreement with Israel.

At a press conference jointly held with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, Erekat said the Palestinians could not accept an agreement lack of details. Such an agreement will not be useful for peace, he stressed.

Likening the situation to fire, Erekat said "if you put it under control, you will get heat and warmth and if you lose control, you will be burned and perished."

Erekat also rebutted the saying that the Palestinians and Israel are running against time to press for an agreement in view of US President Bill Clinton's imminent expiration of term in office and the upcoming Israeli prime ministerial elections in February.

The Palestinians only act on Palestinian national interests, having nothing to do with time, he said.

The press conference was held on the sidelines of the meeting between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to discuss the US compromise proposals.
