Online Reference Service System Opened by National Science & Technology Library

From now on, Chinese technical staffs no longer have to travel specially to the top sci-tech institutes faraway to search for a certain data when writing a Chinese or English sci-tech thesis. Instead, they can search for useful references simply by accessing the online reference service system provided by National Science & Technology Library through the Internet which was formally opened on Tuesday, December 26.

The system also provides paid services of sending the original texts to users by e-mail, fax, EMS or posts within half an hour to two days.

The online service system includes 1.7 million pieces of data. It is the largest sci-tech documents resources network, which was, after an endeavor of two years, established by eight institutes including the Institute of Scientific & Technical Information of China, Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Library of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and that of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, etc.

Currently, the system includes five databases: the databases of English periodicals, English theses published at international conferences, essays published at Chinese seminars and Chinese degree essays. Domestic and foreign users can search for references through the databases for free.

In addition to the above databases, domestic and foreign sci-tech express news and online academic forums will be set up in the future. The website will also enhance the cooperation and coordination with National Library of China, Library of Higher Education and organs of state defense and military sci-tech information to jointly promote the development of Chinese online libraries.

The website for the system is at www.nstl.gov.cn .
