University Students Awarded for Outstanding Performance

China's annual top award for university students was shared Wednesday in Beijing by 160 young people for their outstanding performance in academic studies, social and extramural activities.

Ten students were awarded with scholarships worth 10,000 yuan (US$1,220). The other 150 pocketed scholarships of 3,000 yuan (US$366).

The award was jointly set up by the Chinese Communist Youth League's (CCYL) Central Committee and the All-China Student's Federation with a 10 million yuan (US$1.22 million) contribution from the Beijing-based Jianhao Group.

The year 2000 marked the fifth consecutive awarding of the top honor. It is also the first time in the award's history that privately-owned higher educational institutions have been allowed the privilege of joining the competition for the awards.

The 160 award winners have passed the university screening process, and provincial and national assessment to be determined the country's best-performing university students of the year.

Hu Chunhua, a top CCYL official said on today's awarding ceremony that the real competition in the upcoming new century lies in the fight for the best personnel. The quality of China's university students will play a decisive role in the country's overall performance in future global competition.

Official sources said that Jianhao Group, the award's contributor, was established in 1992 and deals with multiple businesses such as hi-tech, finance, and real estate.
